SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER, LA (KSLA) - With the new year beginning some people are working hard to meet their New Year’s resolutions — but don’t forget your kids.
One way for young kids to stay in shape is by joining the CHRISTUS Swim team. The team takes kids ranging in age from five-years-old to 18 years of age.
They start by teaching each stroke and technique. Then each swimmer advances to different stages depending on their skill level.
Angie Carter has been the CHRISTUS Swim coach at CHRISTUS Louisiana Athletic Club for five years. She has experience in the sport as a former collegiate swimmer herself at the University of Tennessee.
"I know what it's supposed to look like but how do you explain that to an 8-year-old or a 12-year-old or a 15-year-old? It's a challenge to put it in words they understand."
Carter has started molding the minds and bodies of future aspiring college athletes like Lillie Tichenor. The 8th grader said she one day wants to swim in high school and college.
"It's really hard sometimes but it's re
ally fun. You just go do it and you try your hardest.”
Tichenor is one of dozens of kids who compete across the country as part of CHRISTUS Swim team. These emerging athletes also receive help through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. CHRISTUS Swim is one of 17 programs that benefit from Children’s Miracle Network donation dollars. "CMN has made the swim team premier. We're swimming in a new pool now at LSUS and they made that happen. We have blocks. We're outfitting us," said Carter.
Now Carter said more and more of her swimmers are getting noticed at meets.
Evie Deramus swims with the program. She and her mom, Margo Clendenin, says swim team helps her stay fit.
Clendenin is also the program director for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
CHRISTUS Swim uses donations from CMN to purchase equipment and necessities.
If you’d like to join CHRISTUS Swim, prices range from $75 to $120 a month.
