SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The death of Officer Chatéri Payne has shattered the hearts of people across Shreveport.

She graduated from Captain Shreve High School in 2014 and was known as a prominent leader on the track team. Marita Hunt, her track coach, says she considered her a daughter and kept in contact with her after graduation.

“She was a fun person to be around, she made everyone laugh,” said Coach Hunt. “Her legacy would be her leadership qualities and I wasn’t surprised that she became an officer.”

During Payne’s time in high school, she helped the team earn a District 1- AAAAA Champion.

She was preparing to begin her shift when she was shot multiple times around 8:30 p.m. Jan. 9, on on Midway Avenue in Shreveport’s Caddo Heights neighborhood. Police Chief Raymond says police are still searching for the suspect.

Payne graduated from the Shreveport Police and Fire Training Academy in November, fulfilling her dream of becoming a police officer.
