(KSLA) - There was plenty of excitement Tuesday in Texarkana for the annual “Shop with a Cop” day.
For nearly 30 years Texarkana law enforcement and fire personnel have sponsored a day of shopping for special children. More than 230 kids from Arkansas and Texas were given $100 to purchase Christmas gifts for themselves and others.
“It is a great deal for the officer to get out in the community and interact with the kids and give them something for Christmas,” said Sgt. Eric Estes with Texas DPS.
The different police and fire departments involved hold fund raisers throughout the year to finance this labor of love. Police say it’s for the kids but it is something they look forward to every year.
"It is good for us to get in these type of atmosphere with the kids. They see us being a positive influence on their lives so that is what we really love about coming out here,” said Sgt. Seth Pinner with Arkansas State Police.
The parents and children we talked with said this event gives them a positive view of law enforcement and a shopping experience they will never forget.
Various other Texarkana area businesses also supported the event.
