SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - A pedestrian is dead and a Shreveport police officer is hurt after a late night accident on the city's north side.

Both suffered injuries at the same site, but only one was due to the vehicle involved in the crash just before 11 p. m. Monday.

Police say the driver told them she was traveling along N. Market Street near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when a man suddenly appeared and stepped into her path.

The man, later identified as Tommy Jackson, 54, was struck by the car and lifted onto its windshield.  When the driver stopped, police say Jackson rolled off the car onto the ground.

He was taken to LSU hospital but later died from his injuries.

Police took the driver of the car into custody for routine blood alcohol testing.  She does not face any charges at this time.

Meanwhile, an officer who was directing traffic around the scene suffered minor injuries in a separate incident.

Police say the officer saw another vehicle that appeared to be headed toward him and dove to avoid being hit.

He suffered cuts and bruises as well as an injured shoulder when he fell to the ground. He also was taken to a hospital to be examined.
