Barge wipes out bridge in Iberia Parish

LYDIA, La. (AP) - The bridge over Bayou Warehouse in the Iberia Parish town of Lydia was destroyed by an unattended barge that crashed into it Saturday morning during Hurricane Ike.

Robert Freeman, an environmental science manager with the state Department of Environmental Quality, says the barge appeared to have broken loose.

Freeman says half of the barge was caught on what was left of the bridge, and the other half sank.

The crash also caused a small amount of old diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid to spill into the bayou. Freeman described the barge as a "keyway" barge used to put rigs on for drilling.

No injuries were reported.

Freeman says part of the bridge's structure is sticking out of the water.
