No Injuries after Hallsville ISD bus hit by 18-wheeler

UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - It was a scary situation Monday afternoon after a Hallsville school bus transporting 44 students got into an accident with an 18-wheeler.

The students were on their way to band camp when they got into the accident about a mile and a half north of Ore City on Highway 259.

Their bus was on the side of the road because of a flat tire when an 18-wheeler clipped the back of their bus.

"The 18-wheeler was cut off by another 18-wheeler. He put on his brakes and slid and jack-knifed and ran into the back of the bus that was off the road," said Sherri Morgan, the Hallsville ISD band director.

Like the students, the driver of the 18-wheeler also managed to walk away no injuries.

"If you can look at the bus and look at the 18 wheeler and see that we have all these kids still walking around and nobody was seriously injured," said Morgan.

"We're very thankful to the Lord and we're very thankful that our children were safe. It could have been a horrific incident," said Gregg Wright, superintendent of schools for Hallsville ISD.

Despite their accident the Bobcats are still determined to get to camp.

"We may have some sore kids but their ready to go on down there and work hard. We probably won't work as hard as we had intended to work but we're going to go on to camp and try to see if we can't get what done we need to get done," said Morgan.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was cited for failure to control speed.

Hallsville ISD says parents can call the school for information on their children, or they can go to the school's website to get emergency contact numbers to the band camp in Oklahoma.
