SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Dogs are said to be man's best friend. But when it comes to boys, it seems the rules don't apply.
At least that was the case Monday morning for a couple of Shreveport boys who say they were attacked by their family pet.
"Our dog, Duke, was attacking me and then we finally got him off of me, and then he started attacking my brother," said Cameron Gibson.
When police and paramedics arrived at the family's home in the 400 block of Rutherford, they found Gibson's 11 year old brother, Damien, with several bite marks, including a deep gash on his upper arm. Cameron Gibson suffered a minor bite or scratch on his stomach.
"(Damien) might have to have a few stitches," said their mother, Helen, through tears.
What upset Helen Gibson is that the animal that went on the attack had been a longtime family friend. However, she believes a new addition to the family is what set off the dog.
"We had just brought a new puppy home from the pound and our boxer... didn't like him, and he went after the puppy," she said.
Helen Gibson said Duke attacked and killed the puppy. When the boys tried to intervene, Duke turned on them.
"He's gonna be put down," she said. "I can't have him back in my house with my son."
A Caddo animal control officer took custody of the dead Chihuahua as well as Duke, the boxer. Police confirmed that Duke will be put down as per the owner's request.
