Two people killed in separate accidents in Natchitoches Parish

NATCHITOCHES PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Two people have died in separate accident in Natchitoches Parish.

The first happened at 11 pm Tuesday night on I-49. Louisiana State Police say 42-year-old Chery Desha of was walking on the just inside the median of the interstate when she was hit by a car. Desha died at the scene. The driver was not injured. Police are still investigating the accident.

The second accident happened Wednesday evening about 6 pm on US Highway 84 near LA Highway 1226. State police say 39-year-old Elton Patterson of Louisville, KY was east on Highway 84 when his van ran off the road and struck a large tree. He died at the scene. His passenger, 41-year-old Kim Martin, also of Louisville, was ejected from the van. She was taken to LSU Hospital for treatment of what's described as moderate injuries. Police say neither person was wearing a seat belt.

State police say Natchitoches Parish has seen 34 fatalities from vehicle-related accidents so far this year. Four of the victims were pedestrians. Two of those crashes involved motorcycles and four involved ATVs. In 20 of the accidents, 15 involved unrestrained occupants. Only five of the victims were wearing their seat belts.
