SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The heavy rains that fell in the ArkLaTex this week appear to be responsible for a chain of events that left a Shreveport neighborhood without electricity Wednesday morning.
Shreveport police say a tree situated in rain-soaked ground fell onto power lines near Hearne Avenue and Corbitt Street. The tree then caught fire.
Although firefighters were on the scene within minutes, they were not able to attack the fire right away because of its proximity to the live power lines.
A crew with SWEPCO had to be called in to turn off the electricity. That left about 100 homes and businesses in the area without power for about an hour.
Police shut down several streets in the neighborhood as a safety measure.
