There's a new face among the top brass at the Shreveport Fire Department.  District Chief Tom Self was sworn in Thursday morning as the new deputy chief.

Self, a 30 year veteran of the department, now is the second in command--right below the soon-to-be-named fire chief.

As deputy chief, Self will oversee 500 firefighters as well as the department's emergency response operations, which includes the safety and airport fire rescue functions.

"Serving the public has always been our top priority," he said.  "We're going to continue that and obviously looking for ways to improve that.  Just being out there and answering every call that they ask of us is our desire and what we want to do."

Self replaces Mack Mccoy, who retired earlier this year.

The position of fire chief, however, remains vacant.  More than two dozen people took the civil service test in April to qualify for the job.

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover will choose a candidate from that pool, and the city council will have to approve his selection.

Self said he expects to find out who his new boss will be within two to three weeks.
