Major gang roundup nets 29 people in Longview

By LaKecia Shockley

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies arrested 29 people on warrants during a county-wide roundup Wednesday. Now Gregg County authorities expect to see a slow down in drug trafficking in their area.

"The indictment alleges that each gang has maintained numerous drug houses in which crack cocaine marijuana, promethazine pills, and firearms were continually being sold," said Rebecca Gregory, U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.

Investigators believe one of the gangs originated on 12th street in Longview calling themselves the "12th Street Crips". The second group is named the "Davis Street Gang".

Along with drug trafficking, authorities believe these arrests will cut down on many of the violent crimes that plague Longview.

"As we make these arrest we will clear a number of crimes. Some we probably don't even know about yet," said J. B. McCaleb, Chief of Police in Longview.

What we hope is that these arrest will  not only have an impact on the drug trafficking but also on the violent crime in our area," said Sheriff Maxey Cerliano of the Gregg County Sheriff's Department.

Longview residents like Derell Bowie are also hoping that these arrests will create a safer neighborhood.

"The unfortunate thing is that we've got children that have looked to that activity and they think that's the way to go. So, eventually you'll have somebody right back doing the same thing again. At least we got the gangs off the street," Bowie said.

Authorities are glad to get these suspects off the street and hopefully the drug traffic will come to a dead end in Gregg County.

If convicted, the suspects each face up to life in prison. Each could also face a fine of $4 million.
