Pendleton Apartments demolished, paving way for new film studio

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - "It's been here a long time." The Pendleton Apartments stood at the corner of Sprague and Mary streets for a long time. But what took crews months to put up decades ago, came down Wednesday morning, in a matter of minutes. "Just to see it come down is an unusual experience to me."

Demolition crews were tearing down years of history, and memories one brick and one stone at a time, to make way for the new Shreveport Millenium Film Studios. Ledbetter Heights resident Lenoice Atkins says Shreveport the complex was a staple in the community for a long time. "It's just a shock to see it gone."

Just on the outskirts of Downtown Shreveport, for years the Pendleton Apartments was said to be the crown jewel of the Ledbetter Heights neighborhood. But in recent years, the apartment was overrun with crime, drugs and prostitution."

"It's a sigh of relief." And after a answering thousands of those calls, Shreveport Police says they'll be able to breathe a little easier.  "It'll make our jobs easier, the citizens will be safer."

Deplorable living conditions also plagued the complex in recent years, back in August 2007 KSLA News 12 went inside one apartment complex where we found water from the sink being collected inside of a bucket. But residents are looking forward to the future, and building new memories, from the ashes of the old.
