We have new details in the murder of an elderly Longview couple. Police say a hammer was the murder weapon.
On Saturday police arrested 44-year-old Brett Michael Birdwell.
Birdwell is charged with capital murder in the stabbing and beating deaths of Neil and June Killingsworth, both 83-years-old.
The arrest warrant says two days before the couple was murdered, Birdwell brought a hammer inside his apartment.
A couple of days after they were killed, Birdwell says the hammer couldn't be found.
The affidavit also reveals that Birdwell did some yard work for the Killingsworth in the past.
As for neighbors of the two, they say they're relieved someone was arrested but they're still taking safety precautions.
"It makes you feel a little bit better knowing that he was arrested but there's still a lot of crazy people out there. And so now you really pay attention to your surroundings and what's going on because it hit to close to home," said Audrey Pace, a neighbor of the Killingsworth's.
Birdwell remains in the Gregg County Jail on one million dollars bond.
