Shelby County Regional Hospital has been sold. The Center hospital was on the verge of closing at the end of the month.
Instead a new owner will be taking over. Tenet Healthcare Corporation announced the 54 bed hospital will be sold to a doctor who has owned and operated rural hospitals for ten years.
Dr. Tariqu Mahmood owns hospitals in Cameron, Whitney and Dilley, Texas.
Center Mayor John Windham says the chief operating officer came over to Center about 2 months ago.
"We had a long visit with him, telling him about the community and everything. Seemed like nice folks, so we're looking forward to number one, keeping the hospital open, " Windham says.
The two million dollar sale should be completed by november 30th. A tenet spokesman said they're assured the new buyer will make every attempt to keep the hospital open.
