Man Convicted In Stepfather's Death Loses Appeal

A man convicted of fatally shooting his stepfather has lost his appeal. Back in August 2004, Ryan Russell was initally tried on a charge of second degree murder. Then in October, a Red River jury convicted Russell of manslaughter for the death of his stepfather, John Shoebroek. Russell argued that the shooting was in self-defense.
Shoebroek's body was found in a shallow grave, buried under about five feet of dirt dead from a gunshot wound. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal has affirmed the conviction and sentence of Russell. He is serving 40 years in prison.
