LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Authorities say that when a 12-year-old boy was shot at the intersection of South Shattuck and O'Brien streets Wednesday morning, witnesses told Lake Charles police it was a drive-by shooting.

They said someone in a car had driven by, firing once into the home.

But Deputy Chief Mark Kraus says investigators have learned that isn't the case. Kraus said detectives interviewing witnesses learned that the boy was actually shot while several others were playing with a gun.

The boy is being treated at a local hospital.

The shooting was reported at 12:41 p.m.

KPLC will have more information as it becomes available.
