SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Shreveport man must serve five years at hard labor for having two wives at the same time.

Jeffery Lamar Brooks, 40, pleaded guilty to a bigamy charge Monday in Caddo District Court in Shreveport.

Judge John Mosely Jr. then sentenced Brooks.

Brooks married a woman in April 2007 then, without divorcing her, married another woman last year.

He was arrested Dec. 18.

Brooks already had been sentenced to five years in prison on other charges.

That sentence, ordered in November, came as a result of him being convicted Sept. 29, 2017, on charges of molestation of a juvenile and indecent behavior with another juvenile.

Now Brooks is to serve the two 5-year terms concurrently.

His guilty plea to the bigamy charge marks his third felony conviction and makes him eligible to be billed as a multiple offender, the Caddo district attorney's office reports.

Brooks remains in Caddo Correctional Center, where booking records show he also is being held as an in-state fugitive.
