NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

New Orleans Mayor-Elect LaToya Cantrell arrived to Gallier Hall in the Zulu parade on horseback Tuesday, donning Mardi Gras colors and the Carnival spirit.

Cantrell made history in November when she was the first woman to be elected as the Mayor of New Orleans.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu welcomed her at Gallier Hall on what he called "the most beautiful day."

"Mayor-elect, you got a beautiful day today and everyone on the parade route is excited to welcome you," Landrieu said. "She is going to be a great mayor."

Landrieu also thanked city workers and police for all their hard work ahead of Mardi Gras, a sentiment Cantrell also echoed in a speech themed by love.

"I'm here to show you love cause you deserve all of it and more," Cantrell said as she addressed the parade crowds. "Together we are in this, and we are going to move this city forward."

Cantrell also thanked Landrieu and the New Orleans City Council for helping in the transition.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be here," Cantrell said. "As a city we are constantly evolving, just like Mardi Gras."

Cantrell will begin her term as mayor May 7.
