When $3.4 million of Coby Fleener's base salary became guaranteed last week, it complicated how the team could handle his future.
Fleener's cap number balloons to $8 million in 2018, currently the fourth highest on the team. Fleener only had 22 receptions and two touchdowns last season and saw his snaps greatly diminish before a concussion ended his season early after the Rams loss. Clearly, his production has not matched his hefty price tag.
But moving on from him may not be that simple. According to overthecap.com, the Saints would now carry a $8.2 million dead money charge by releasing Fleener. This means they would actually lose $200,000 in cap space if they cut him. That's obviously not beneficial for the club to do that.
If they're still set on moving on from Fleener, the best option may be to release him with a post-June 1st designation, which would give them $3 million in cap space in 2018 but spread the dead money out over the next three years. In this scenario, Fleener wouldn't come off the books until June 1st.
Another option could be try to trade Fleener. Or they may just keep him as it simply doesn't make fiscal sense to move on from him just yet.
