SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

High school students from the Pathways to Excellence Charter School in Shreveport returned from a two week trip to Cuba Sunday evening.

Principal John Keith says the trip was designed to give students a better outlook on the world and expose them to different cultures.

Keith says due to recent diplomatic relationships between the US and Cuba, the trip would have been nearly impossible a few years ago.

Students Jorden Perry and Tony Jackson say they visited the countryside first.

"But after the countryside, we went to Havana. That's like the main downtown strip where back in the day they did everything," said Perry. "It was exciting, we got to see all the old casinos, the big hotels, the ocean, all the monuments and the University of Havana."

Jackson says while experiencing the culture, they also found a new found respect for their own home.

"I'm completely grateful that I am in a developed country. A lot of people here complain a lot, but we're a developed country. Imagine living in a developing country, where you don't really get paid much and life is not as easy as it is here," said Jackson.

Keith says the school offers several all expenses paid trips throughout the year and will also take a group of students to Washington D.C. at the end of November.
