SHELBY, NC (WBTV) -

The terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, hit close to home for one family in Shelby Thursday.

Gaye Devoe’s son, Gabe, was in a hotel right near the attack site. The younger Devoe plays on the basketball team at Clemson University. The team is currently in Spain to play exhibition games before the regular season.

Devoe got a call she never expected from her son Thursday morning – he told her there had been an attack right outside of his hotel.

“I was like, ‘are you for real?’” explained Devoe.

Thirteen people have been killed in the attack, and dozens of others were injured. Devoe couldn’t believe her son was so close to the danger.

“My son could have been in that. It hits home,” said Devoe.

She said his team was set to board a bus for a game less than an hour before the attack happened. She’s thankful no one was hurt.

“He could have been outside, so just very thankful for God’s timing and divine intervention that they were inside when it happened,” said Devoe.

Clemson Athletics shared a message on Twitter Thursday explaining that the team was safe. They are scheduled to fly back to the United States Friday.

“I want him back right now," Devoe said. "If I could get him back right now, I want him back right now.”
