Tropical Storm Arlene is the first named storm of the 2017 Hurricane Season. Why rare? First, the hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, So it's a bit early. And it's only the second storm to form this early since satellite tracking has existed. Arlene had, at her peak, estimated winds of 50 mph. It is now Post-Tropical and is over open water with no threat to land. It is expected to dissipate late Friday. Early tropical storm formation is not an indication of a more active storm season. The prediction for the 2017 hurricane season is for 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, 2 of which may be major. That's a near average season. In fact, 2017 may be less active than 2016.
