CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

A portion of Highway 1 has reopened Wednesday morning after deputies say someone struck an alligator with their vehicle.

According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Highway 1 between Leonard Road and East Kings Highway south of Shreveport around 3:30 a.m. for an injured animal. When they arrived, they say they found an adult alligator in the road bleeding from the mouth.

The alligator's tail had been run over by an 18-wheeler. Its total length is 10 feet, 11 inches and weighs 400 pounds.

Deputies called for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to remove the animal from the road.

Southbound traffic was allowed access to the northbound lane while crews worked to clear the scene.
