U.S. Senators John Cornyn of Texas and John Boozman of Arkansas made a visit to the
ArkLaTex to show their support to Red River Army Depot.

The Red River Army Depot is a maintenance facility for the U.S. Army. Nearly 5,000 people, both civilian and military members. work there.

The Senators toured the satellite campus of Texarkana College where many Depot employees are trained.

"What I really think we need to be focus on is maximum wage jobs and that is what I see happening here is people learning job skills that really will allow them to provide for their families and pursue the American dream," said Senator John Cornyn.

The senators say the mission of Red River army Depot is more important than
financial benefits to the ArkLaTex.

"It is a facility so important not only for here but it is important for the defense of our country," said Senator John Boozman.

That's something Senator Cornyn said he agreed with. "I can't think of anything more important than our national security and this is a central component of that," said Cornyn.

Over the past 20 years, the Red River Army Depot has survived two Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) processes by the federal government. In each case, the local depot faced the risk of being closed. Now, local leaders say there is talk of another BRAC coming up in 2019.

"I don't see a BRAC on the horizon but you never know so we want to be ready for it.," said Senator Boozman. "I know the things people look at are things like skilled workforce and ya'll are working so hard to provide that workforce."
