We have all heard a great deal about fake news this year.

The label is a new one. For many of us, we used to call it tabloid or yellow journalism. For decades, the best place to find this type of communication was on the shelves of our supermarkets. While scandalous and often amusing to read, many of us would never pass it on as factual considering the source.

But then the arrival of social media and now we pass along lies that show up right there in our hands, on our phones or tablets without any consideration of the original source – blurring the lines between the truth and distortion, or fact and fantasy.

Simply stated, we have the power to stop it. If you do not know the source and they have not earned your trust, do not share it.

I hope we can all agree that our Facebook followers deserve the truth. As a local media outlet, we have a long-standing commitment to verifying facts before we report them and then reporting them accurately. Our friends deserve the same respect.
