Do you know a young girl with a love for math, science and weather?
The National Weather Service in Shreveport will bring together women in STEM careers across the region this Saturday with their GiRLS GLOW 2.0, or Girls Really Love Science and Girls Really Love Weather event.
The event is free and open to children of all ages. It will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 at the Shreveport office of the National Weather Service on Hollywood Avenue near the Shreveport Regional Airport.
The event is being held to help promote the STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics field to girls. Although interest is growing, and the number of women launching careers in this field is expanding, men still outnumber women more than two to one.
According to a study done by the National Science Board in 2013, women make up half of the total U.S. college-educated workforce, but only 29% of the science and engineering workforce.
"It is important to show young women what we're doing and hopefully spark an interest in them," said Felecia Bowser, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
