(RNN) - A Miami defense lawyer’s pants burst into flames in front of the jury during his closing arguments in an arson trial.
Stephen Gutierrez was arguing that his client’s car was not purposely set on fire, but rather spontaneously combusted – when his pants spontaneously combusted.
He fled the courtroom, trailing smoke, leaving witnesses open-mouthed.
He returned unharmed in singed trousers and told the jury that the incident was not courtroom theatrics, but rather caused by defective batteries in an e-cigarette in his pocket, the Miami Herald reported.
The jury convicted his client of second-degree arson.
Police seized frayed e-cigarette batteries as evidence in their investigation of the incident.
