Carthage police investigating deadly fight between father and son

Carthage police say a man killed his son with a vehicle after the pair got into a fight Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the 400 block of Cook Street just after 12 p.m. for a report of a man trapped under a vehicle.

When they got there, they discovered that the incident was an assault in which 44-year-old Robert Lee Barkin, Jr. was killed when he was hit by a vehicle and pinned to the tree.

After investigating, police say the incident stemmed from a family fight between Barkin, Jr. and his father 66-year-old Robert Lee Barkin, Sr. The fight earlier in the day and had escalated, with one of the man having a pistol and the other using a vehicle.

Justice of the Peace Judge Taylor ordered the body of Barkin, Jr. to be taken for an autopsy.

In a statement, Carthage Assistant Police Chief Blake Smith said Barkin Sr. was identified as a suspect in his son's death. 

According to deputies from the Panola County Jail, Barkin, Sr. was not in custody as of noon on Tuesday.

Assistant Chief Smith said detectives are working the case and when it is completed it will be forwarded to Panola County Criminal District Attorney, Danny Buck Davidson.
