SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Shreveport has announced the closing later this month of St. Pius X Child Development Center, but parents are still holding out hope diocese leaders will change their minds.

Rumors of that daycare closing in north Shreveport were confirmed Monday morning, and the reaction from parents has been swift and negative. Some say it creates a logistical nightmare for them, because there are no available spaces at any other nearby daycare centers.

"I've been very upset," said parent Christy Lummus. "I've been crying. I called my parents. 'Hey, what can we do?'"

Lummus is among more than 40 other families that just learned that the child development center on north Market Street, in far north Shreveport, will soon close its doors.

"It's all I've been doing is figuring out what we can do to keep it, to keep it open because there's no other options out here."

“We have been blessed with many successful years of providing a quality program to the families of our area, but maintenance issues in the current structure are simply too much for us to overcome,” said Pastor Rev. Joseph Kallookalam, who is known to parishioners as Father Joe. “We are committed in the coming weeks to a transition process that will assist our parents as they seek alternative day-care for their children.”

"I'm sure the community would pull together and help them out if they could just give us a ballpark figure," Lummus suggested.

But Father Joe said the cost is simply too much for the parish to bear.

"We do not get that much money," adding that they do not expect to be able to raise that much in the near future.

News about the closure of the St. Pius X daycare center couldn't come at a worse time, especially when you consider that the daycare at First Baptist Church in Blanchard just closed last month. In fact, 15 children just transferred from there to St. Pius.

That included one of Lummus' children, who is at St. Pius at the moment. Now, for the second straight month, they'll be searching for a new daycare. And they won't be alone.

According to a statement released by the Diocese of Shreveport, St. Pius X daycare will close on Friday, October 28. That leaves parents less than three weeks to find another daycare, or convince diocese leaders to change their minds.
