Knife-wielding man shot by Shreveport police identified - KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana News Weather & Sports

The man shot and killed by Shreveport police after allegedly charging towards them with a knife Thursday morning has been identified.

Police were responding to a call from someone from Sam's Town Casino of a 38-year-old man with a knife walking on Clyde Fant Pkwy. in front of StageWorks just after 8:00 a.m.

"The dispatch said that he was walking down the Clyde Fant waiving the knife at people," said Corporal Breck Scott with the Shreveport Police Department.

Police say an officer told the man, identified as Lawrence Green, several times to drop the weapon and he did not. Green then reportedly charged towards police and an officer fired several shots hitting the man in the upper body.

Green was taken to University Health with life-threatening injuries were he later died. 

No police officers were injured in the incident.

Even early in the investigation, cameras and recordings became an immediate priority. 

"Right now, the investigators are at the casinos and StageWorks downloading the video and also the officer did have a body cam on him," explained Cpl. Scott.

Cpl. Scott said it's unclear exactly how many shots were fired at the suspect or how many times the man was struck. But, police say a pocketknife with a 3-inch blade was recovered at the scene. 

Both north and southbound lanes of Clyde Fant Pkwy. were shut down for about 2 and a half hours as police collected information and evidence. The roadway has since been reopened.

The officer involved in the shooting, as well as another responding officer, were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such a case.
