BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - According to LSU officials, Alabama's linebackers coach Kevin Steele has been hired to be LSU's new defensive coordinator. He is expected to be introduced at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon

Steele is known as a great recruiter. He played a big part in Alabama's No. 1 recruiting class ranking last year. In 2013, he was Alabama's director of player personnel.

“This is a great hire for us,” said LSU head coach Les Miles. “Kevin has had a very successful coaching career, one that has seen him coach alongside some of the top coaches in the game. He won a national title with Tom Osborne at Nebraska, coached with Bobby Bowden at Florida State and coached in the NFL with one of the great defensive coaches in Dom Capers.

“He has a great defensive mind and he's an outstanding recruiter. He knows our players and our system and his knowledge of the SEC and the SEC Western Division makes him a great fit. We are very excited that Kevin will be joining our staff.”

Previously, he has been a defensive coordinator in both the ACC at Clemson University from 2009 until early 2012 and SEC at Alabama in 2007.

Clemson won the 2011 ACC title, its first since 1991, before allowing 70 points to West Virginia in an Orange Bowl loss to complete that season. In 2010, the Tigers led the ACC in defense and ranked No. 13 nationally in points allowed.

Steele has also worked under legendary Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden from 2003-2006 as the executive head coach. In 2005, he helped sign the top recruiting class in the country for the Seminoles.

From 1999-2002, Steele served as the head football coach at Baylor University, compiling a record of 9–36 overall and 1-31 in the Big 12 conference.

Steele also has NFL experience as the linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers from 1995-1998 which included a trip to the NFC Championship game in 1996.

Steele was coached linebackers at Nebraska from 1989-94. During his time there, the Cornhuskers had a record of 60-11 overall and went to six bowl games. They also won the 1994 national championship and four conference championships.

His other coaching experience includes assistant jobs at Tennessee (1987-88), Oklahoma State (1984-86) and New Mexico State (1983).
