NEW BOSTON, TX (KSLA) -

The man accused of shooting and killing an East Texas deputy in 2011 pleaded guilty to murder Thursday, the day jury selection for his trial was set to begin.

Tucker Strickland, 24, pleaded guilty to killing Bowie County sheriff's deputy Sherri Jones, 54.

Jones was taking Strickland to a court hearing in April 2011, when Strickland overpowered her, took her gun and shot her. Strickland was being taken to a hearing to determine his competency to stand trial for assaulting his mother in August 2010.

He fled from the courthouse in the county transport van, but was caught about a half-hour later by police in Ashdown, Ark.

Strickland will automatically be sentenced to life in prison. No family members of Strickland or Jones were in attendance Thursday, because no one was expecting this plea.

Jones' family will give a victim impact statement Wednesday.
