Labor Day marks last long holiday weekend of the year

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - As summer winds down, people across the ArkLaTex are savoring the last bits of a long holiday weekend. Families made the most of the last long weekend of the year before students have to buckle down and hit the books.

The sun peeked out from behind the clouds to warm up Labor Day, giving kids their last taste of summer fun. Tieundra Blalock decided to bring her nieces and nephews out to savor the moment, saying, "It's free, it's fun and they love to be in water."

Whether sun bathing, or casually riding a bike through the spray park, there was plenty of fun to be had and no labor involved. Blalock doesn't get many off days, but when she does get a break, she enjoys spending her down time with those who make life worthwhile.

"Yes, I am never off. This is the best for me," Blalock said.

In Ford Park the grills were out as families used this day off from work as an opportunity to bond. They say it's all about the kids today.

"You know, give them a little break from school," Derek Marshton said. "They start back in school and won't have another holiday until Thanksgiving."

Marshton says that spending time with his family and enjoying good food is the only thing on the agenda for the day.

"I'm just going to eat and go home, eating a good hotdog."

It's back to work and back to school for the kids on Tuesday, but in the meantime this family is taking the time to cherish each second that they have together.
