One person killed in northeast Texas motorcycle accident

BOWIE CO., TX (KSLA) - One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a pickup truck collided with a motorcycle early Monday morning.

The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. along the eastbound lanes of I-30 in Bowie County near the town of Leary.

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the motorcyclist was traveling on I-30 when, for unknown reasons, he had to lay his motorcycle down. A passerby saw the motorcyclist and his female passenger in the roadway and pulled the woman to safety. Before the passerby could get back to the motorcyclist, a pickup truck ran over him and his motorcycle.

The person driving the motorcycle was identified as 45-year-old Nicky E. Brooks of Garland, Texas. He died at the scene. His passenger was injured and taken to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana. Her condition at this time is unknown. Witnesses said she was conscious and talking right after the accident.

The driver of the pickup truck was identified as Eric Hanks of Clarksville, Ark.

Investigators are not sure if Brooks' motorcycle caught on fire before or after it was hit. No citations were issued.
