GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Two athletes were hurt in a crash less than 200 meters from the finish line of the Para-cycling Road World Championship road course on Sunday.

Race officials said two male para-cyclists collided just after the final turn during the final sprint of the race shortly after 12:30 p.m.

One cyclist was from the Czech Republic and the other from Austria.

Both cyclists were rushed to the hospital, said Louis Barbeau, the UCI technical delegate for the races.

A witness said one man had to be carried away from the course on a stretcher.

Barbeau said racers are always sad to see someone get hurt, but said crashes are expected.

"In cycling crashes happen from time to time," Barbeau said. "It's always unfortunate when crashes happen, but they are a part of cycling."

On Monday, a spokesperson for Greenville Health System said the Czech cyclist, who was identified as 39-year-old Jiri Jezek, suffered a serious chest injury requiring surgery.

Jezek is currently in serious, but stable condition, and is no longer on a ventilator, according to the GHS spokesperson.

"He's alert and talking," Barbeau said. "There's nothing to suggest he won't fully recover. He's one of the most experienced para-cyclists in the world. He's participated in four Paralympic games and medaled each time."

He is scheduled to have another surgery on Tuesday on his arm.
