Hands up, don’t shoot RVA rally planned

Final preparations are underway for the "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" rally. Capitol Police confirm they are expecting crowds to march to capitol square for a peaceful demonstration following the police involved shooting death of Missouri Teen Michael Brown.

"This is a peaceful march," Lynetta Thompson who is state advisor for the NAACP Youth and College Division. "We are not here to bash the police."

People from across Virginia are coming to RVA for the Hands Up, Don't Shoot prayer vigil, march, and rally.

"We are here to say that we are going to be more proactive," said Thompson. "Our message is when you have a bad apple you need to deal with that accordingly."

The plan is to gather at Abner Clay Park in Jackson Ward for a prayer vigil for Michael Brown and other victims of alleged police brutality. The crowd will then march to Capitol Square with stops at government buildings like city hall along the way.

"We will certainly keep an eye on things," said Captain Randy Howard with Capitol Police who says he expects a peaceful gathering.  "We'll have officers in the area just like we always do for these rallies. They will be there just to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that everything is safe."

This event starts at 10:30 in the morning at Abner Clay Park with that prayer vigil. The group will march to the Bell Tower for the rally at 1 P.M. You are asked to bring plenty of water.
