A man has been charged with murder a week after police say he was responsible for a deadly wreck that killed woman and her boyfriend.
Fifty-two-year-old Jose Esteves Herrera was booked in the Union County jail early Wednesday morning and charged with second degree murder, driving with a revoked license while impaired and reckless driving.
Monroe officials say he will face two counts of second degree murder.
The wreck happened along Highway 74 near John Moore Road around 9:30 p.m. last Wednesday.
Seventy-year-old Laral Leslie Callahan was killed in the crash. Her boyfriend, 64-year-old Paul Randall Dye died from his injuries two days later.
Officials said Herrera, of Reidsville, was traveling west on Hwy 74 when he crossed the center line and hit the other vehicle head-on.
The second car then struck a tractor trailer.
Herrera was also injured in the wreck and taken to the hospital. He was treated and then released.
Herrera was arrested in Rockingham County late Tuesday night and transferred to Monroe police shortly after midnight. He's being held on a $200,000 bond.
Officials say alcohol was involved in the crash. The evidence was turned over to the Union County District Attorney's Office who filed the charges against Herrera.
