2-A-Days: Waskom

WASKOM, TX (KSLA) - The Waskom Wildcats finished 14-1 last year making it all the way to the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

This year, they're looking to build on that success.

The Wildcats return four 1,000-yard rushers from last season: QB Trace Carter, FB Dillon Benton, RB Kevin Johnson and June Bug Johnson.

Waskom moves up in Classification from 2A up to 3A.

Head Coach Whitney Keeling is entering his fifth season as head coach and is excited about building on what the team accomplished last year.

"Anytime that you return a bunch of guys that are physical and they know their assignments, you know you feel really comfortable about that," said Keeling.

"We've worked extremely hard on the technical part of it. We worked really hard in the weight room to get stronger and hopefully bigger and faster that we can compete for the entire campaign."

Waskom has focused a lot during the off season on defense. Eric Stephens, Kileon Johnson, Chan Arnie and Mike Reason look to make big impacts on Friday nights.

Arnie suffered a broken leg last season in week four. Coach Keeling says he expects Arnie to be a big contributor on both sides of the ball this season.

Reason led the defense last year with 191 tackles. He says he wants more sacks this year.

Kevin Johnson says Coach has been stressing defense leading into the 2014 campaign.

"Our coach says defense wins championships and we pride on that," said Johnson.

"Offense wins games but we know we're going to score cause we got so many weapons. We coming back on defense passionate and show everybody we good on defense."

Waskom hosts Center to open the season August 29th at 7 PM CDT.
