MAGNOLIA, AR (KSLA) -

Columbia County, Arkansas sheriff's deputies and Magnolia officers arrested 20-year-old Byron Lavell Dunn of Magnolia and charged him with a terrorist act in the slaying of two young men.

Byron Lavell Dunn of Magnolia, AR had nothing to say Tuesday as he was escorted from a Columbia County Court. He's being held on $1 million bond in connection with the shooting deaths of Brandon Hobdy, a football player at Southern Arkansas University, and Wayne Payton II, an SAU alumnus.

Police said the shooting occurred during a back-to-school party at the VFW Post 2870. The party was not sanctioned by SAU.

Tuesday, Payton's father spoke from his home in Plano, Texas.

"A great kid, full of live always, always reaching out to help someone," he said of his son.

Wayne Payton Sr. said his son had gone to SAU to play football and further his education.

"But to have seen him turn his life around I find joy in that," he said. "I am so grateful that I was able to see him turn it around like that, but it hurts my heart that I lost him like that, but I know God knows best."

On the SAU campus Tuesday, the university's police chief Anthony Williams said Dunn's arrest does not change the level of alert at the school.

"Our main concern is about the successful resolution of this particular case," he said. "That includes not only any additional arrest that may be made, we also are going to focus on the prosecution of the case as well as any convictions that follow."

Payton's father said he plans to follow those same steps.

"I am going to continue to inquire and push and do whatever I can until we can get some answers," he said.

Hobdy, 23 of Garland, Texas and Payton, 24 of McNeil were bystanders at the Magnolia VFW hall when a fight broke out around 1:13 a.m. Sunday. Both were killed.

Local law enforcement reported that several people were kicked out of the venue after the dispute erupted. They then got into a red vehicle, pulled out a weapon and began shooting indiscriminately at the crowd.

The two men were taken to Magnolia Regional Hospital where there were pronounced dead.

Dunn is awaiting his first appearance before a judge. The investigation is ongoing.
