A small plane went into Lake Pontchartrain near the Lakefront Airport on Friday.

The accident happened at about 4 p.m. near 5000 Lakeshore Drive. A source told FOX 8 reporter Rob Masson that the single-engine plane stalled twice in flight and the pilot was forced to ditch it in the lake near the runway. The pilot, identified as Robert Braswell of Shreveport, escaped and swam to shore.

The plane, a Piper Cherokee, was completely submerged.

New Orleans police, Levee Board officials and firefighters responded to the scene. There are no reports of injuries.

Masson said the pilot was flying in from Beaumont. He was debriefed by airport officials Friday evening.
