Shreveport FD recruiting future firefighters

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The Shreveport Fire Department is looking for a few good firefighters.

The department is seeking to hire 29 new firefighters. According to Chief of Training Louis Johnson, who says SFD tries to hire twice a year, and classes are held once or twice a year, depending on the need. That is usually determined by the budget and attrition, whether it's through retirements or firefighters leaving the department for other reasons. The fire department employees around 625 people. While they normally see around 250 to 300 applicants each time, Johnson says they haven't had as many people taking the tests. It has not yet been determined what may be causing the falloff in interest, according to Johnson. Turnover has historically been low, but he says that may be picking up due to the nature of a generation in which job changing is more common.

Recruiting efforts are targeting high school graduates (or those with GEDs), aged 18 to 29. In the interest of diversity, Johnson says they also particularly want to reach out to woman and minorities.

Those interested must fill out an application and pass a civil service exam, as well as pass a background check and psychological examination.

Jobs in the Shreveport Fire Department include arson investigators, inspectors, communications, training, bomb technicians and others. Firefighters must have three years with the department before they can begin training in those specialized areas. Click here for more information on employment with the Shreveport Fire Department.
