GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The Humane Society of South Mississippi will reduce the adoption fees of adult dogs and cats from Aug. 23 through Aug. 30.

Right now, children are heading back to school. Schedules are growing hectic. The HSSM aims to find homes for more adult dogs and cats. These adult animals require less time and attention from their new owners.

"Anyone who has ever owned a puppy knows the drill; chewed shoes, whiney nights, accidents on your carpet. We know it's a lot of work," said Tara High, HSSM Executive Director. "That is one of the reasons we love to match adult pets with new families. A lot of the headaches that come with the care of a young pet can be completely avoided if that family chooses an adult."

On any given day, HSSM provides shelter and care to approximately 300 pets looking for new homes. The majority of these are adult animals six months and older. Many families seek to adopt puppies and kittens, leaving older animals in the shelter for longer periods of time. This results in higher rates of stress-related illness in the adult population at HSSM.

Many of the adult dogs and cats are already housetrained, know basic obedience and have experience in a home setting, making them the perfect pets almost immediately; no training required.

In order to encourage the adoption of these great animals, HSSM is offering a discounted adoption fee of only $25 for adult cats and dogs. Some exclusions apply. This Training Puppies? Nobody has time for that! adoption program will be valid Aug. 23 through Aug. 30.

HSSM's adoption fees include:

  • Your new pet
  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Up-to-date vaccinations
  • Updated rabies vaccine
  • Microchip
  • Engraved ID tag
  • Thirty days free pet health insurance
  • Free vet visit within seven days of adoption
  • Heartworm tests for all dogs over six months
  • Starter bag of Hill's Science Diet food
  • 10% off in HSSM's BowWow Meow Boutique on the day of adoption
