RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Ridgeland Police Department has just apprehended a "most wanted" suspect with the help of a private detective.

24-year-old Tavon Dorsey-Hurtt was arrested on Thursday afternoon after a private detective found him trying to hide in an attic at a home on Archer Avenue in South Jackson.

One convenience store owner says Hurtt claimed to be a JPD officer, and so he cashed checks for him.

The store owner says he was duped out of $900.

According to the private detective who helped catch him, Hurtt was wanted by Ridgeland PD on felony false pretense; that charge is related to accusations he forged an deposited fake checks.

Private Investigator James Boshart says, "You got a whole lot of people happy cause he's been making false charges to their bank accounts and everything, also now they can get all their stuff straightened out, recover their money, he would pay restitution on all that, depending on what the judge says, a little peace that checks aren't gonna bounce no more."

Ridgeland police say Dorsey-Hurtt cashed four checks worth over $2,600 at businesses in their city.

"He or somebody that's familiar with him that's been counterfeiting these checks with routing numbers from a local business, through some basic software programs.  They're printing up their own checks.  It's easy to do, it's easy to get away with until law enforcement catches up with you," Said Lieutenant John Neal of the Ridgeland police department.
