AZ Lottery sets 7th straight sales record

It's been another record-breaking year for Arizona Lottery sales.

Lottery officials said they closed out fiscal year 2014 with $724 million in sales, a 4.5 percent increase over the previous year and the highest amount in the state's 33-year lottery history.

The state reaped $175 million of that total and it marked the fifth year every designated beneficiary received full funding, officials said.

It was also the seventh consecutive year of record-breaking sales, officials said.

Lottery revenue supports several programs under four main categories: education, health and public welfare, economic and business development and environmental, benefiting cities and towns in Arizona's 15 counties.

Players received nearly $460 million in state Lottery prizes, including 17 winning tickets, each worth $1 million or more.

Arizona Lottery retailers earned more than $48 million in commissions during the year from the sale of Lottery tickets, also a record amount.

Jeff Hatch-Miller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery, credits much of fiscal year's success to a surge in Scratchers sales, which totaled more than $483.9 million. The introduction of the popular Lucky Life Scratchers series greatly contributed to the year's strong ticket sales, he said.

Lottery officials said there are plans to introduce additional new games in fiscal 2015, beginning with the September launch of $185 Million Cash Explosion, a new Scratchers ticket that offers the highest payout ever for a $20 Arizona Lottery ticket.

Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets.
