SPD vice 'Operation: School in Session' nets more than a dozen arrests

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

From citizen complaints to an undercover operation. Now, more than a dozen men are locked up after a prostitution sting. "Operation: School in Session" targeted the 1400 block of East 70th Street in Shreveport.

Fourteen men are behind bars and facing charges of solicitation of prostitution. Residents on East 70th Street say they're glad that their streets are being cleared, “you've got this going on, on this corner and you've got something standing there, it's rough, and the kids have to walk through it,” said resident Vicki Collins.

On Wednesday, vice agents responded to people like Vicki Collins by launching "Operation: School in Session.” Vicki Collins has lived on the street nearly 50 years and says there is a much bigger picture to look at with these arrests, “Most important, it's most important that the kids will get the opportunity to grow up and be safe, that's most important,” said Collins.

In all fourteen individuals were arrested and Collin's believes it's necessary to weed out negativity in the neighborhood, "getting those few bad apples out the bunch and giving those kids lots of love,” said Collins.

Each arrest made, signifies a step towards the vision of creating a thriving environment for the youth, "prostitution and drugs gone, you'll feel safer," said Collins.

Collins isn't the only one standing behind police in their quest for ridding East 70th Street of prostitution.

Ladarien Brosette says he understands how the activity could cast a negative light on the area,"as they're growing up they might think that's the right thing to do, so I can see how it could be influential, on the kids around here seeing that growing up.”

Both Brosette and Collins say their street isn't a bad place, it just needs a little cleaning up, a challenge that Shreveport police has already accepted.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
