AAA projects slight bump in Labor Day travel

More Arizonans are expected to travel over the Labor Day weekend than last year.

AAA Arizona predicts about 668,000 people will bid adieu to summer with weekend trips, up about 1.3 percent over the 2013 Labor Day weekend.

AAA predicts about 34.7 million people nationwide will travel this year, a 1.3 percent increase over last year.

"The modest rise we're anticipating can be attributed to greater consumer confidence, which has led to more spending," said Amy Moreno, senior travel manager for AAA Arizona.

More than 557,000 Arizonans (83 percent) plan to drive to their Labor Day destination, a 1.4 percent increase from last year, AAA said.

Gasoline prices in Arizona are about $3.46 per gallon, compared with $3.34 last year, so gas prices won't be a major factor in determining whether consumers will travel over the last summer holiday, AAA said.

As with previous summer 2014 holidays, about 1.5 percent more people (58,000) will travel by air.

"Starting with Memorial Day weekend, this summer's travel season has seen a gradual increase," Moreno said. "As consumer confidence continues to improve, the travel industry should see this trend continue."
