SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Smoke alarms and sprinklers woke up residents at a Scottsdale apartment complex late Wednesday night.

Fire crews were called out to the three-story building near 90th Street and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard after a fire broke out in one of the units just before 10 p.m.

Jay Ducote, division chief for the Scottsdale Fire Department, said heavy smoke was found on the third floor of the complex and the resident of the apartment was already outside.

The resident was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn Hospital, but it wasn't known if his injuries were fire-related, Ducote said.

The fire burned an extensive area of the apartment and additional firefighters were called in, Ducote said.

"The guys had a tough time putting it out," he said.

Scottsdale has an ordinance requiring sprinklers in multi-family units, and the fire served as a reminder for people to check the batteries in their smoke alarms, Ducote said.

The cause had not been determined, Ducote said.

No other information was available.
