PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

A 41-year-old Peoria man and his wife were arrested Sunday in connection with the homicide of a man whose body was found in a Peoria canal.

Nathan Perez was arrested just after 4 a.m. Sunday by Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on one count of first-degree murder and one count of felony concealing a body.

His wife, 40-year-old Billie Jean Perez, was booked into jail for hindering prosecution and later released.

The body of 35-year-old Rolland Lee Tockey was found against a grate in the Salt River Project canal between 67th and 75th Avenue in Peoria on Aug. 20 by a woman riding a bicycle along the canal trail.

Tockey, identified by a Kansas identification card found in his wallet, had been released from jail Aug. 14 after serving a six-month sentence for aggravated assault and domestic violence during a "tumultuous" relationship with Suzanne Leyba, who started a relationship with another man while Tockey was in jail.

Tockey's mother said she had received a Facebook message from Leyba that stated "Nate's boy" had put out a "hit" on Tockey and that if he went to Perez's house "they got plans for him."

Detectives said they gathered information at the crime scene and from a knowledgeable witness that led them to the Perez household, where more evidence of the homicide was found, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

The witness told detectives that Nathan Perez killed a "child molester" and needed "help getting rid of the body." Tockey is a registered sex offender, the spokesman said.

The witness also said Nathan Perez killed Tockey in the bedroom of his home and, with the help of another man, took the body to the canal, where they disposed of the victim.

Nathan Perez, who had served time in prison for aggravated assault, was being held on a $750,000 bond.
