People line up for the back-to-school bash given by the Laces of Grace organization in Texarkana.
About 1,000 people attended Saturday's event and 2,000 pairs of shoes were given away.
TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -
A back-to-school bash held in Texarkana Saturday made a lot of young people walk with pride on their way out, thanks to the generosity of many people in the community.
The event was held at 8 a.m. at the House of Refuge Church. An estimated 1,000 people were in line to take advantage of the giveaway. Event organizers say 2,000 pairs of shoes were given to those in need.
The "Laces of Grace" organization, which provided the shoes, was established five years ago by Matt and Corie Graves. They've given away more than 15,000 pairs of shoes to families in the ArkLaTex over the years. Graves said this back-to-school program is financed by community donations of money and time.
"We started by giving a pair of shoes to kid for back to school, saw a great need here in the community, and since then it's just grown."
"It was worth it," said Texarkana parent Angela Dunn. "We look forward to this every year. The kids gets nice things for school, and we really appreciate them doing what they do."
Matt Graves said they provide shoes to youth at all times of the year, not just at for the beginning of school.
"During the year as the need arises, if somebody needs some shoes, just contact us," he said. "And if we have those shoes in stock, then we are more than happy to provide those for them."
