TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Plans are coming together for Tyler's new animal care facility. The project was highlighted in the city's budget proposal on Wednesday, and will use a half cent sales tax plus donations to fund the first phase of the facility. While the building won't be ready until next fall, the animal care advisory board is already making recommendations.

Dr. Mike Maris is just one of the board members looking at the medical aspects of the new facility.

"Any time you bring all these stray animals into one place, that is the biggest problem," Maris said.

The city's proposed budget calls for seven positions to work in the facility.

Maris said while it's still early in the design process, the focus of this project is making a safe and sanitary environment for the animals.

"I think by going slow, getting everybody's input, that we're going to do it right from the start," Maris said.

Maris said plans are in the works to bring veterinary technicians in from Tyler Junior College so they can get hands on experience.

"There is no veterinary tech program in the area, and it's something that is really needed," Maris said.

The City of Tyler says they will work with local pet adoption organizations, so the animals being cared for at the new facility can also find a home. The city says it hopes to have staff for the facility by next summer, and a tentative date is set for October 2015.
